HPAI Cases Confirmed in New Jersey Live Bird Markets

HPAI Cases Confirmed in New Jersey Live Bird Markets

By Jamie Martin

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA) have confirmed new cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in three live bird markets, two in Hudson County and one in Mercer County. The outbreak has prompted swift action from state and federal officials to contain the virus.

Routine surveillance detected HPAI in domestic poultry samples collected on March 4 and 5, leading to confirmatory testing.

As a result, affected markets have been placed under quarantine, preventing them from receiving new poultry until thorough cleaning and disinfection measures are completed. Markets will remain closed for a prescribed period before restocking.

“The live bird market operators have been fully compliant with our requests and have taken the necessary steps in efforts to prevent avian influenza in their businesses,” NJDA Secretary Ed Wengryn stated.

Although HPAI is highly contagious among poultry, the risk to the public remains low. Officials assure that no infected poultry were sold to consumers. However, those who had close contact with affected birds are advised to monitor for symptoms such as fever, cough, and respiratory issues.

State and federal agencies continue to emphasize strict biosecurity practices, including minimizing contact with wild birds, using protective equipment, and maintaining sanitary conditions in poultry operations. Individuals who suspect HPAI in birds should report it to the NJDA Division of Animal Health.

The USDA and NJDA remain committed to containing the outbreak and ensuring the safety of the poultry industry and the public.
